A Return to the Beautiful

The Greek sculptors and architects attempted to created mathematical relationships through their creations which would lead to esthetic perfection.  Polykleitos, an ancient sculptor wrote that beauty lies in proportion of the parts and not so much in the individual elements or materials that went into making an object.

The philosophy of the ancients was that Beauty shines brightly upon all things and anyone who arrives within the sphere of Beauty, also becomes beautiful.

Socrates wrote the following quotes;
“By means of beauty all things become beautiful.”
“Beauty comes first.  Victory is secondary.  What matters is joy.”
“I pray Thee, O God, that I may be beautiful within.”

The ancient philosophers believe that the true spiritual seeker desiring to return to the One needs only a simple direction.  Follow beauty.

Most of us are attracted to what we call a handsome or beautiful person, an alluring piece of art, some man made object which seems to call out to us, “look at me or long for me.”

The ancient teachers tell us that what we dimly recognize in every beautiful visible object is the beauty beyond.  “We dart from one delight to another yet sometimes remain unsatisfied.  For we never are able to gaze upon pure Spiritual Beauty, only its shadowy material reflection.”

“The lover…has a kind of memory of beauty, but cannot grasp it in its separateness, but is overwhelmingly amazed and excited by visible beauties.”

What they were attempting to say was that true beauty is not in separateness but in unity.  It is not one element but a proportion and interrelationship of elements that evokes a true feeling of beauty within.
So long as we believe we are just our outer selves we will be cut off from the beauties within.  Through experiencing the beauty of our own soul then we experience a beauty more akin to the One.  An ancient adage stated that a beautiful soul recognizing beauty everywhere.  “Just as a person carrying a bright lantern is continually immersed in light, even during the darkness of night.”

The ancient Greek sculptors had a deeper motivation for their creations.  It was not about just creating an outer form but leading individuals to recognize and enhance the beauty of their inner Soul.  They believed It is not by running around outside that the individual recognizes the Grandeur within himself, it is an understanding of himself by himself that leads to true spiritual awareness within the life.

Every material form whether it be animals, flowers, diamonds, people or whatever are all animated from the spiritual realm.  Matter has cast a veil over ourselves.  “The beauty we seek, whether in thoughts or things, is wonderfully close at hand.  We just need to look within rather than without.”

A current author said, “So all of us are sculptors, regardless of our ability to wield a chisel and mallet.  Each person can choose to create the most beautiful object d’art imaginable, his own self.”  “For the ancients, sculpture was an art which ‘took away,’ as opposed to painting, an art which ‘added on.’  The statue preexisted in the marble block and it was enough to take away what was superfluous in order to cause it to appear.”

Becoming more spiritual and finding the beautiful is not difficult.  “Nothing needs to be forced.  There is no need to pretend to be anything other than what we are.”  Our artistry is to chip away and toss aside those aspects that obscure our true glory.”

Go inside yourself and look.  “If you do not yet see yourself as beautiful, then do as the sculptor does with a statue he wants to make beautiful; he chisels away one part, and levels off another, makes one spot smooth and another clear, until he shows forth a beautiful face on the statue.

To empower and inspire.  With love, in love and through love to you.
